How useful is Windows under dosemu?

Post by Joakim Pietr » Wed, 08 Oct 1997 04:00:00

Hi!

I recently read that dosemu is now capable of running 16 bit Windows
in real mode.  I only have Windows for Workgroups, which won't run in
real mode, so I haven't been able to test this myself.

Does anyone know how useful a dosemu/Windows combination is; ie can it
be used for real applications (eg Quark Xpress), or is it strictly for
playing solitaire?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Try Wine.  It is a Windows 3.1 emulator for X.  I don't know if Quark
Express runs, but many useful apps do.

DOSEMU is for dos, for the most part.  I've heard that people are able
to run OS/2-Win3.1 and Win95 OS/R2 under 'Dosemu', but that is a different
story.  AFAIK, normal 16-bit Win 3.1 doesn't work.  Wine works though.
You don't want to run 'Windows' anyway... you want to run individual
'Windows Applications'.

Get a DOSemu/Wine/DEXE combo. You may be surprised how well it all works
together.
