how to format a DOS diskett with linux

Post by Ning Qia » Wed, 09 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Could someone please tell me how to format a DOS diskett under linux?  I
tried fdformat but could not use mtools on the resulting diskett.  Also,
is there a way to set up the "page up" and "page down" keys on the
keyboard so that they will do page up and page down in xterm?

Thanks,
Ning

There are a set of tools called 'mtools' which include format,dir, mkdir
..., all the basic DOS/FS tools
that you need. Just type 'man mtools' at your linux promt, if it's
installed.

        fdformat /dev/fd0<type>
        mkfs.msdos /dev/fd0

        or alternately...

        mkfs.ext2 /dev/fd0 (to make a Linux floppy)

        Both mkfs & fdformat have fairly decent manpages.

Here's a shellscript I use:

        #!/bin/sh

        # low-level format a diskette and write a validated DOS filesystem on it.

        fdformat -n $1
        if [ $? = 0 ]
                then
                /sbin/mkdosfs -vc $1
        else
                echo Format failed!
        fi

        echo
        echo done...
        echo format another?
        read kb
        case $kb in
                y|Y)
                        exec $0 $*
                        ;;
                *)
                        ;;
