Why am I not logged in wtmp?

Post by Hermann Himmelbau » Sat, 06 Jan 1996 04:00:00

Hi!
I am currently using Linux1.2.9 on a 486-DX/4 100.
When I log in on the console and make a 'who am i' or just a 'who'
I find myself in the list.
Whenever I log in by just opening a new X-Window, I am not logged
in the /var/adm/wtmp and hence I am not displayed by 'who am i'
The problem is, that no one can talk to me as I only connect remotely
with X.
Do you have any clue why this happens?

                Thank you in advance

The problem is that the wtmp and utmp files have several different locations
They all need to be linked to the "real" location which is either /var/adm/
or /var/log. Look in the /etc and /usr/adm directories. Also.. check the
files via the 'ls -li' command. You may find that they are delinked. On
some of the older slackware version the /etc/rc.d/rc.S contained an entry
the erase the /etc/utmp and recreate it on reboot. Not cool, if the file
is supposed to me a link.

1. Why am I not 'Logged in' ?

Hi,

I am using Sun O.S. 4.1.1

I use screen to open multiple windows on my vt100 terminal. This
morning, when I tried to set up an alarm for myself using 'leave', I
got the following error message :

Script started on Thu Jun  4 10:00:01 1992
%>leave 1010
leave: You are not logged in
script done on Thu Jun  4 10:00:13 1992

Why am I not logged in ? Is this a bug in screen ?

Thanx in advance.

Cheers,
