PLEASE HELP ASAP: Trying to use PPP to across other computer with
serial port Trying to use PPP to across other computer with serial port

I have two computers a desktop running Redhat 7.0 and a notepad running
Redhat 6.2. I use to use PLIP to share data but someone told me that PPP
is better and I been trying to get it to work.

I been running the following command on both computers

pppd -detach crtscts lock <local ip>:<remote ip> /dev/ttyS1 38400&  I am
using a null modem cable so it should work.. if you can help in anyway

Thanks

I don't know of any reason PPP would be better than PLIP.  In fact when
connecting an old 386, PLIP was much faster than PPP because the old
unbuffered 8250 UART could not cope with speeds beyond 9600 baud, while
PLIP would pass 40KB/s which is much faster than a V.90 modem.  Although,
I did have to set the timeout in plip.c longer on the faster box so it
would not timeout waiting for the slow box to respond.

You may be forgetting 'passive' option which you at least need on the
first pppd, so it is still listening when you start the other one.

1. using serial port will hang the computer

Hi

I have a Gateway2000 solo laptops, and i try to use the serial port /dev/cua0
The computer work well, but when i try to access the serial port with
either 'cu or setserial, the system hang. I try to compile a very small
kernel (no network, pcmcia options, no PSAUX, etc.)and same result

If i use win95, i don't have any problem.

Does anybody have a similar problem, or do i have to setup a specific
parameter in order to use the serial port on a laptops

Here my config

Gateway2000 solo 2100
32 Megs RAM
2 Gigs
kernel 2.0.30
GPM not installed
