which is truly better.. Solaris.x86 or Linux..
I have a quick processor and plenty of mem..so which would be the best?

also.. (if you happen to know..)

- where can I get Office stuff for X-win for Linux?
- where is the best place to find the linux drivers for PCMCIA IBM's Home
        & Away modem/ethernet card?
- Will Linux run on MMX ok? I never tried it yet..

Thanx,
Fletch

Linux, of course! (100% unbiased opinion :->)

RedHat Applixware, http://www.redhat.com/
Caldera, http://www.caldera.com/ - Staroffice CD's are almost free now.

Sure - an MMX is backward compatible with the Pentium. Linux won't take
advantage of the MMX extensions, though - at least not yet.

Dunno about Solaris.x86, but Linux running on a Sparc has reached
higher benchmarks than Solaris (for disk accessing, at least)..
It must be the same way under x86...

: also.. (if you happen to know..)

: - where can I get Office stuff for X-win for Linux?

Take a look at StarOffice at www.stardivision.com

: - where is the best place to find the linux drivers for PCMCIA IBM's Home
:       & Away modem/ethernet card?

  Dunno, sorry...

: - Will Linux run on MMX ok? I never tried it yet..

I've seen people reporting it runs perfectly...

All the best,

I don't know about pure MMX, but I'm running Linux beautifully on a
K6-200...
