Setting up 3D Acceleration in Linux

Post by amitabha ro » Mon, 08 Apr 2002 03:31:21

Hi,

I am interested in setting up 3d Acceleration for my ATI Mach 64 video
card on a Linux box running Redhat 6.1.

I downloaded the OpenGL binaries from opengl.org and installed it
(I probably did not need to since they come packages with Redhat ?)
However I cannot find the hardware accelerator drivers for the ATI Mach 64.

Can someone help me ?

THanks
Amitabha

First of all, are you sure the card is capable of hardware OpenGL? You
need at least the Rage Pro or later chipset.

Now, if you do indeed have such card, you should install Utah-glx (look on
sourceforge). This is not compatible with the modern GLX implementation in
XFree86 4.x, but it is the only option for hardware this old.

Or just upgrade to RedHat 7.2.  I don't use 3D accellaration, but while
I was fighting with a new xpert 128/PCI I noticed that the 3D stuff is
there for the newer Mach 64 cards.

They probably have XFree 3.3.6 and utah-glx as an alternative for older
cards. Utah-glx is apparently being ported to XFree4, but I don't think
there is a lot of development going on.
