hi,
I am planing to buy a larger box to run linux. I decided to buy a P5 with
local bus using the AHA 1542 CF SCSII-II Controller. Does someone know if this
'configuration' is supported by the kernel or else (people who wrote drivers
to get this working ...).

Thanx in advance

You should have no problems except for the possible >1Gb problems
explained in the SCSI FAQ if your hd is >1 Gb. If your local bus is vesa,
you might want to consider one of the vlb hard drive controllers that are
1542 compatible (unless you already have the 1542) because the price
difference is only about $60.

The 1542CF works great in my Box (the newer modells come with SCSI-2 and
FAST-SCSI !!!). If you use a big HD turn all the options (exept the device
scanning) off.

1. Adaptec AHA-1542CF and UMAX Vista S6E scanner

I am trying to run a UMAX scanner through an Adaptec SCSI card, but my
computer is choking during bootup.  I have installed a kernel with the
proper SCSI support, and I believe that the Adaptec card is being
properly recognized.  Unfortunately, the computer hangs at boot time
while looking for SCSI devices connected to the card.  The following is
an excerpt from the boot messages:

...this loops without end (or at least 15 minutes) and the computer
never completes booting.

I have heard that Adaptec cards are notoriously sensitive to termination
and cables, so I purchased a new cable.  This did not help, and I'm out
$25.  Before I continue to buy and test cables, I would like some
suggestions as to what the problem really is and how I can fix it.

If this is merely a cable/termination problem, how can I ensure that a
given cable/terminator combo will work?  Any suggested brands or
specifics to look for would be appreciated.
