dip and Xylogics annex (dynamic SLIP) help needed

Post by Daniel Damon Roscig » Fri, 14 Oct 1994 23:04:11

I am attempting to setup Slip to a Xylogics annex.  Everything
goes fine until the annex replies with
Annex address is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.  Your address is yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy

at thgis point dip hangs.  I have the lines:
get $remote Annex address is
get $local Your address is

in the dip script and am expecting dip to find the address
from the annex output and then continue with the script.  Does
anyone have a working script that they could share?

Dan.

The following works for us!

############################################################################
# DIP script for Ireland On-Line dynamic IP SLIP service
# V0.2
# 7 Aug 1994
# Joe Desbonnet
#
# To make this script work, change USERNAME and PASSWORD to be your username
# and password. Also, if you are calling the Dublin number, then comment out
# the galway entry, and uncomment the Dublin one.
#
# Also, you will need the following in your /etc/hosts file:
# If calling Dublin:
# 193.120.234.194   iol-annex
#
# If calling Galway:
# 193.120.234.39   iol-annex
#
#
# Next, save this file in, say, /etc/iol.dip
# You can now connect to IOL using the command "dip /etc/iol" - you must
# be logged in as root.
############################################################################

main:
# Set the desired serial port and speed.

I think this will fail on the most recent version of Uri's dip.
It eats CONNECT, and errlvl is set to 1 upon connection (errlvl
is set to different things depending on what is returned: 0-OK,
1-CONNECT, 2-BUSY, 3-NO CARRIER, etc).

1. Need help with DIP in dynamic slip env.

I am having some trouble getting DIP v.3.37 (uri) working from home.

I am dialing into a bank of modems which supports 32 lines.  I dial
one number and may be attached to anyone of 32 modems which are on two
terminal servers.  My problem is I don't understand how to make dip
acquire the remote IP address dynamically (which I assume it can do
via BOOTP).  It seems that DIP is designed for static environments or
well known dynamic environments.

Ideally, I would expect DIP to be able to get the netmask, remote
gateway, etc via bootp... Am I correct about this?

If anyone can offer suggestions I would appreciate the help very
much...
