All of a sudden no other users except root can
login I get

limrick1!login: user1
Password:
Last login: Thu Jan 25 22:25:47 on tty4
Linux 1.2.13.
No directory /home/user1!

NO CARRIER

yet ther is a /home/user1 directory!!!
anybody got a fix ???

check the permissions and user on /home/usr1 and all of the files
there in. If somebody did something like "chown fred /home" instead
of "chown fred /home/fred" it might cause that behavior.

permissions, pointers, PATH: if its not one its likely to be one of
the other two.

This may have nothing to do about it. But, a while back I had the
same problem. Drove me crazy for awhile, check your /etc/passwd file
if you recently edited it. I had an error halfway into it and only
the users BEFORE the error could login.
