Leafnode/slrn - can't see new messages until texpire is run

Is the fetchnews finishing correctly?  What does it say if you run
"/usr/sbin/fetchnews -vvv" while online?  Does this happen with other
newsreaders?

Quote:> I am using leafnode 1.9.4-11 and slrn 0.9.5.7-14

I'm assuming that's the Debian packages.  Could you please file a bug
report against Leafnode, particularly if this happens with other
newsreaders too?

That's actually correct (if confusing) operation.

When Leafnode has finished downloading the articles it starts a
background process to index them and returns to the shell.  The XOVER
messages are produced by this background process, and despite
appearances aren't actually a problem but rather a normal part of the
indexing.  The reason the process seems to *is that you were
already at a shell prompt while they were being produced, so when they
stopped no new prompt was displayed.  Pressing C-c would just cause
the shell to redisplay its prompt.

Quite why nothing was showing up in slrn is another matter...

Problem sorted, one way or another.  I would like to know what's going
wrong with Leafnode, though.

I get the same on occasion but the trigger is fetch not finishing correctly.
It occasionally "locks up" whilst talking to the server. The server in this
case is changi v1.2c on my OS/2 box. I suspect it is a duff message or
perhaps a message that doesn't contain a header line that fetch expects. It
tends to happen only in moderated news/announce type newsgroups. Repeated
calls of "fetch -vv -n" step past the problem.

I'll have to try that but I have a sneaky feeling that last time I did it
all worked perfectly but It may have been the stepping past mentioned above.

Have you got texpire running in cron? suse automatically runs it every so
often as a cron job ie:

SHELL=/bin/sh
PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/lib/news/bin
MAILTO=root

#-* * * * *    root  test -x /usr/sbin/atrun && /usr/sbin/atrun
0 21 * * *     root  test -x /usr/sbin/faxqclean && /usr/sbin/faxqclean
5 22 * * *     root  test -x /usr/sbin/texpire && /usr/sbin/texpire

# Get mail and news from server
02 00 * * *    root  /usr/local/bin/getmail

Insultingly obvious question - you did just try pressing return first?

If so then feel free to compare configs or outputs to see if we can spot the
problem.

I've never had a problem with leafnode and slrn (Using it now). I have found
that too, shame you can't turn that XOVER stuff off :(, but just pressing
enter has the same effect

Yes, that is correct.  After a fetchnews run, you will see the XOVER
stuff.  You DO NOT want to hit Ctrl-C.  Just hit enter.  The command
prompt will come back.

Like I said in a previous message, the XOVER will not display in the
next version of Leafnode.

The next version of Leafnode, 1.9.5, which is currently in beta testing,
will not show the XOVER stuff after a fetchnews run.  I believe this
version should be out very soon now.  There are a couple of issues that
Cornelius is working on.

Yes!! Nothing happened.

I am not using leafnode now. I am using noffle which worked immediately
and appears to be faster on a dial-up connection.

I am only prepared to spend so much time in getting something to work
when there are alternatives available.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Leafnode/slrn - can't see new messages until texpire is run

Post by rob » Sun, 19 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I've personally had problems with noffle only downloading header and
* for 10 mins and having to resart it, not good at 2am. I might
try leafnode combo. if you think it works well.

1. slrn, leafnode & 'from:' header oddness

I'm using slrn to post to localhost which is running leafnode which connects
to news.ntlworld.com via an ntlworld dialup account. My from: address is

my username on my local computer is sammy and the hostname for the local
computer is osyd, so I can see a rationale for some of this addy, but the
rest is a mystery!

anone think they can shed some light on this?

Cheers & God bless
