There is no such thing as "generic SCSI-1 CD-audio".  Only in SCSI-2
were CD audio commands standardized to be generic.  All SCSI-1 CD audio
commands were vendor unique commands.  They may use the current SCSI-2
CDB format, but the command codes were all vendor unique (which follows
the SCSI-1 spec).

If the SCSI driver allows direct commands to the CD-ROM drive, then
an app could be written to make the CD-ROM play audio CDs.  Finding
the vendor unique commands might be a challenge.  I might have the
Panasonic commands somewhere if you're interested.

I have Matsushita SCSI CDROM stolen from my PowerMac and it
works fine with WorkMan.  Try it yourself.

I don't have a CD, nor SCSI, but Linux (Slackware) does include workbone, a CD
player interface (one for cons, one for X).  Couldn't this be used so long as
the drive is mounted?

Perhaps. But the comment above stands: SCSI-1 CDROMs are not accessed
using a uniform sound interface.

Perhaps you want to look into xmcd: it is huge, but it has builtin
handlers for the various procotols used by a large number of different
SCSI-1 drives.
