Netscape ELF -> How to run it without ELF compiler

Post by Andrzej Jesmanowi » Sun, 03 Nov 1996 04:00:00

Hi,
How to run new Netscape ELF version in my old, a.out style
environment?

Have I rebuild my all compilers?
Can it be done by smartly installing new ELF libc ?

I am slightly sick of rebuilding system and replaceing binaries.
I did it many times, but there is a limit. I don't want to do it
before I will buy a new Pentium PRO board.

I have now Linux 1.2.0 with 2.5.8 compiler and with additionally
installed Motif 2.0 stuff.

Thanks in advance.
Andre

There is a faq somewhere about adding ELF support.  If you want to build
your own libraries, you will need to make sure that you have a verison of
gcc that supports ELF, but you can probably just get binary distributions.
You also need to make sure you have a dynamic linker that supports ELF.  I
don't know what versions do.  This is all available on tsx-11 in the
pub/linux/packages/gcc directory

You have to upgrade to a mixed a.out/ELF system. See the ELF-howto that
is periodically posted to comp.os.linux.answers. Then you have to
install the ELF-Xfree-binaries (at least the libs, but it's better to
install them all).

I did it that way, and thanx to the ELF-howto's author it worked fine.

1. dynamic ELF -> static ELF ??

Is there some way to create a static ELF executable from a dynamic
one, without having to have access to the object files from which
the dynamic ELF was created?  A magic combination of 'ld' flags,
or a public domain utility?  This could save a lot of work when
upgrading major software systems (like X-windows), and there are a
few non-standard, little-used, applications sitting around.
