ALT-F[1-6] problem in Xwindows (Slackware 3.3)

Post by Ben Greea » Sun, 07 Sep 1997 04:00:00

Hi.  I recently installed Slackware 3.3 on my new machine.

To start up Xwindows I run the 'openwin' command.  This gives me
6 virtual screens.  On my old machine, I could hit alt-F2, for example,
to switch to the second virtual screen.  This no longer works, though
I can always double-click in it with my mouse.

Anyone know where I should begin looking for a solution to this
annoyance?

Thanks,
Ben

This is controlled by your window manager, often fvwm. Check out whatever
setup files it uses (no, I don't know where Slackware puts these).

Try Ctrl-<arrow key> to change virtual desktops
under X. If you want to get back to a "regular"
text-based VC, try Ctrl-Alt-F8, Alt-<console #>.
Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back into X again.

Gosh Trane, what a great trick.  I just filed this page for future
reference.

Thanks a million!

1. ALT-F[1-6] and X

That mostly works for me.  If I select the background (ie click where
there isn't a window open, then just pressing an arrow key moves me
from desktop to desktop.  However, this still requires me to make a grab
for the mouse.  What a really want is a way to do it without having
to point and click.

Before, as I mentioned, ALT-F* would navigate me around...I found this
extremely fast and useful.

As an asside, does anyone know if/how one might customize key-combos
under X?
