dip fails with 'Unknown server error'

Post by Dean Schul » Wed, 13 Mar 1996 04:00:00

I'm trying to set up a SLIP connection, but dip always fails
with 'Unknown server error'.  Using -t doesn't matter.  Any suggestions?
(I'm running Linux 1.2.13 from the slackware 3.0 distribution with the
version of dip that comes with it.)

I'm a new Linux user, but I went thru this as well.

1) Make sure you 'Configure' your network when you run setup.

2) There are several files that need host, and other assorted
info.  Reference the Serial & NET-2 HOWTO's for this.

Good Luck,
Dan

I was getting the same error (among others) and traced it to my login
script. The script was asking the ISP to give it it's IP address and
the Server was not co-operative.  I just replaced the variable in the
script (where the server was supposed to put the address) with the
actual address I knew it to be.  It worked fine after that.

silly and simple so naturally hard to see.

You may also try rerunning NETCONFIG (I think that's what it's called). I
had the same problem w/1.2.13 (seems everybody does with this version)
and once I cleaned up my network parameters, it worked fine.

I found the problem in my /etc/hosts file.  The comments say that one
should NOT set the loopback address to the name of the machine.  After
alot of other efforts. I finally changed the name for the loopback
address from "loopback" to "rocky" which is my machine name as set in
the /etc/hosts.conf file.

I'm pretty sure this is not correct in the absolute sense, but it is
the only way I could successfully invoke dip.  I still have a problem
though - I can connect and get the correct addresses.  But, when I
type ifconfig, it shows no configured ports.  And after about 15
seconds, the ISP drops the line.  Apprently, my machine is not
respondint to any of the packets from the provider, and the line times
out.  Any ideas out there?

Good Luck with your problem.
