/dev/cua2 - ttyS2 - IRQs

Post by Pat Murph » Fri, 14 Jun 1996 04:00:00

I'm trying to get a third 16650A port working (to connect with an
old 8088 (running kermit) as a dumb terminal). I've read the
HOWTOs and FAQs, and do have it connecting so I can login from the
terminal. But the response time is only acceptable when I jiggle
the mouse (/dev/cua1)! This seems to indicate an irq conflict, and
when I display /dev/cua0 and /dev/cua2 with setserial, it won't
display them and states "Device or resource busy", again, pointing
to a conflict.
In /etc/rc.d/rc.serial, I am telling /dev/cua2 to use irq 10.
Doing  setserial -a /dev/ttyS0  shows it using irq 10. I have
tried setting the jumpers on the board in all 4 positions. cua2
s e e m s  to be defaulting back to using irq 4 (which is being
used by cua0 (my mouse).
Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong?
                                                 Thanks, Pat

hears a bell on this line, it's from that ttySx (cuax) so this should
match with the "jumper set" IRQ.
In most cases you can choose to set the IRQ of ttyS1 to 5 on your IDE
interface card but check the docs.
if this still not works try cat /proc/interrupts. This gives the
interrupts in use.
In my case, I ended up with:
/dev/ttyS0 irq 4 uart 16450
/dev/ttyS1 irq 5 uart 16450
/dev/ttyS3 irq 3 uart 16550a

1. /dev/ttyS2 (/dev/cua2) reports "device or resource busy" on kernel 2.1.95

I have just upgraded my kernel from 2.1.77 to 2.1.95

I use isapnp tools to set the IRQ and I/O address of my modem, then
setserial
to tell the driver that /dev/ttyS2 is where it is.

This worked fine on 2.1.77 kernel but now I get the message that the
"device or resource busy", when I attempt to open it (with say, dip
or kermit). Nothing else is using the port.

What has changed between these two kernel releases that would cause
this?

(also tried /dev/cua2 (which is being 'deprecated') to the same
effect...
works on 2.1.77 and is busy on 2.1.95)

(remove the '__' before the address when replying please)
