mgetty vs. uugetty which should i use

Post by <pa.. » Sun, 11 Aug 1996 04:00:00

hello,
i just want to alow my self and others to dial into my computer throught
the modem. I have a 14.4 data/fax modem. But when i tried to get uugetty
to work it would get a segmentation error when some one would try to
logon with out an acount. This would cause uugetty to stop working, lock
the modem up and etc. I have heard many good things about mgetty but i
would like to know more about it? could some happy (or not happy) users
of mgetty tell me alittle about it, i can't find any good refrences
about it. What i want to know is would it work for me, what i would like
to be able to do (or need to);
uucp
dialing out on the same line
a working (won't just die for stupid reasons) getty
and maby getting and sending faxes.
thankx a ton if you could just take as sec and send me some mail saying
"yeah use it rules!" and if you have the time just alittle bit about it

pablo

ps: sending responses also by email would be nice, i have major usenet
lag.

I don't know much about mgetty but if you also want to be able to send
fax data with your modem then you should install hylafax. Its a complete
fax package and offers a faxgetty application that can be configured to
call different programs depending on the type of call.
As far as fax transfer and handling is
considered it is very superior to mgetty and sendfax.

If you only want to establish data connection I think mgetty is the
betty choice.

mgetty supports:
   - Class 2 & 2.0 fax sending and receiving, with distinction
     between fax and data
   - voicemail (vgetty)
   - direct FTN (fidonet) and PPP logins

This is possible, although mgetty is of very good quality. But with
Hylafax, you cannot use your modem for any other purpose.

And you can always use mgetty to receive faxes and hylafax to send
them.

In my opinion, mgetty is very portable and the best getty ever.  There
are simply some tricks which must be learned, eg, never use the cuaX
devices files (always use the ttySX ones).

Huh?  Hylafax allows outbound data calls by anything that uses the
normal uucp locking convention and recognizes inbound data and
voice if your modem supports it.  I'm not sure if vgetty works
with it or not, but the hooks are there.

1. UUGETTY -vs- MGETTY

Just how reliable is this 'mgetty' is it a script file or utility that
can be easily integrated or does it have to be made (make install;make
depend;make clean) ..just curious. I'm having a wail of a time getting my
Hayes 28800 to answer calls and eventually to call out with but neither
getty, nor uugetty on ttyS0 do the trick although they easily create a
lock file and thereby render the port/dev useless.
