Kernel won't uncompress

Kernel won't uncompress

Post by Vlad D. Mark » Fri, 17 Jul 1998 04:00:00

I am using RedHat 5.1. I tried to build a 2.0.34 and a 2.0.35 kernel
with the same results. The prompt tells me it loading the kernel. I
expect the next prompt to be that the kernel is being uncompressed,
well the (expletive deleted) kernel never gets uncompressed. The system
just goes no farther than "Loading .....".

Can anyone tell me what stoopid thing I did wrong? I did get one kernel
properly configured when I*got RH 5.1 but no good ones after
that one.

If you could mail me a copy as well as posting I'd be grateful, the
traffic on this group is a bit much for me - but  I am expecting you
to be reading here (oh dear).

Thanks,
Vlad

Kernel won't uncompress

Post by Stuart Traver » Wed, 22 Jul 1998 04:00:00

Hi Vlad,

I'm not sure what you did but I'm pretty sure I know what I did to end
up with the same problem. You see, I'm a linux newbie and I got carried
away with making myself a brand new "kernel" (clever me), and even
managed to edit the lilo.conf file to retain the old kernel as a backup,

but boot off the new kernel as default. I cleverly moved the old vmlinuz

to vmlinuz.old, then copied my brand new vmlinuz into boot... Then I hit

ctrl alt del and watched my system reboot.... except it got to
"Loading......" and then stopped.

Guess which idiot forgot to run lilo to update the MBR properly... yup,
me.

Well, I rescued the system with my rescue disk, ran lilo again, and
Robert was my mother's brother..

Dunno if this helps you, but I hope so. If you find out any other bright

ideas, please share :)

Cheers,
Stuart

1. newbie compiled kernel won't uncompress

When trying to load from diskette appears an error message:
Loading..................................
Uncommpressing Linux

Invalid compression format
--System halted

The kernel source ( 1.1.59) in the latest Slackware distribution seemed to
compile fine.
In accordance with instructions in The Linix Bible:
        rdev zImage /dev/sda3
cp zImage /dev/fd0  # to make a floppy
