netscape problem

Post by John » Tue, 04 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I haven't connect to my ISP using kppp in my RH6.1 box.  I can also ping web
sites using URL, getting around 120ms aver. round trip time.  However, when
launching netscape 4.7, the download is very slow compared with win9x or NT.
And the browser stalls from time to time.  I was told there may be something
I can do with the /etc/ppp/options file and as far as I have tried, the
problem is still there.  Any help will be much appreciated.

The "something" you can do is extract the modem initialisation string from
Windows95/98/NT and insert it in your Linux modem ini command.
Sometimes with doggie modems you can run something like net optomizer under
windows and get fast speed then... find the ini string the app created and
copy it into ppp to keep the speed under Linux. There's a FAQ on the subject
at www.linux.org and you might find a new ini string at www.modemdoctor.com

You might try adding
         setserial /dev/ttyS0 spd_vhi
to /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Quote:>I haven't connect to my ISP using kppp in my RH6.1 box.  I can also ping web

I assume you are connecting in some other way then, since you must
connect to "ping websites" successfully.

Enable debugging of your chat connection Put a -v after the word "chat"
in your scripts, and then look in /var/log/messages for the CONNECT
messages. It should tell you wnat the connect speed is  either between
the two modems or between your modem and your computer.
Look in your modem manual for the command to tell the modem to report
eac of these speeds and see what it says for both.
(Note that 120 msec is a fine round trip time through a modem line.
Phone lines are very slow.)

And the other way around.
Compiled from source "wvdial" and run it.
This gave me an initialisation string that later given to MS-Glassware
improved the performance considerably.
Good luck
