Mounting FAT32 Partitions

Mounting FAT32 Partitions

Windows 98 seems to think it would be a brilliant idea for me to convert my
HD (the windows bits, anyway) to FAT32. If I do, will I still be able to
mount it in Linux?
Please reply by mail,
Thanks

Yeah, im pretty sure you still can, specify the -t vfat option to
mount.  If I'm wrong, someone correct me.

Mine mount just fine with the same specs as FAT16.
Just use vfat to mount in the /etc/fstab

I posted a similar question not very long ago and the general consensus
was "yes you can", but nobody mentioned the minimum kernel version
required - anybody know what kernel version is required for FAT32 support?

Thanks
Simon

Round about 1.1.89, as far as I recall. I was certainly mounting fat32
under 2.0.0 kernels (though I don't recall if that was a patch or not).
Anyway, support was there certainly in about 96.

I know from personal experience that releases with kernel
version 2.0.35 (Red Hat 5.1) and later have support for FAT 32.
I've heard 2.0.34 is the earliest with FAT 32 support but
cannot confirm.  I've you've got one of these later kernels,
you'll probably be happier with FAT 32's large partitions
on the Windows side.

I succesfully installed a Slackware 3.5 distro on a Hard disk with FAT32
and Windows 98. Since then I have installed a redhat 6.0 distro, all
without any trouble with FAT 32. The main difficulty is creating the Linux
partition with FIPS. You have to turn off all the optimising when you use
the Windows 98 defrag, and run it twice to get rid of the stray sectors at
the end of the disk that prevent you from shrinking the partition. If you
already have a Linux partition, I don't think there should be a problem.

The relevent kernel versions: Oldest was 2.0.34 I don't know if earlier
ones than this work. Try 2.2.14 and sleep soundly...

1. Cannot mount Fat32 partitions. Help !!

: > > >I cannot mount Fat32 partitions. Why is that?
1. You need a fairly recent kernel to support fat32
(the recent 2.0.x or 2.1.x)
2. You need to specify fs type "vfat" when mounting.
3. vfat support has to be built in the kernel (not a problem usually
unless it's a kernel YOU  customized)
