1. About 'jiffies'

-- Hi...
I'm now studyig Linux Kernel and scheduling.
Nowadays I got stuck in Linx jargon, jiffies.
Is there anybody who can tell me what jiffies means and How it can be
used and what is the role of it?
And in other systems, like System V Release 4, what is the same thing as
jiffies?
