If you want to do some "serious" database development you could check out
FlagShip. FlagShip is a Clipper clone for Unix systems, and there is a
Linux version available. Sorry but I don't have any contact details.

You could try asking for more details in comp.lang.clipper.

As a Clipper developer I had a play with FlagShip (there is a limited
demo version available for free) and was quite impressed, and if you know
Clipper or dBase then there is very little to learn from the database and
language side of things.

Although the list is (probably) not exhaustive, there are a number of
database programs listed in the "Database Managers" section of the Linux
Applications and Utilities Page, found at

You find info about DB-man and Flagship in the commershal howto for linux
(posted here) and on lots of linux pages.

1. KSH "esc=", anything similar?

Is there a simple way I can re-create the output KSH gives in "command recall"
mode, ESC and then pressing the "=" key?  Example:

$ ^[=

(where ^[ is the escape key)

outputs;

1) test0
2) test1
3) test2
4) test3
5) test4
6) test5

The files test[0-5] are the files in the current directory.

I would like to be able to use that format for a shell driven menu system I'm
developing for some users.
