advice on new machine

Post by James Cliffo » Thu, 03 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I'll be buying a new machine sometime next week, and the first thing that I
plan to do is drop Win98 for Linux. There are a couple of machines that I'm
looking at that fall in my price range, and I'm looking for a little advice.

One seems to be a generic type thing, tower with a bunch of goodies.
The other is a HP Pavilion. Don't know the model number, but it's rather
recent.

If I could, I'd go for the generic one, simply because it may save me from
some sort of proprietary device that Linux may not know about. The Pavilion
is also a desktop model, which, once upon a time, was a bad thing (not
anymore, though, since it's got everything that I could want already
inside).

I guess that I'm looking for people who might be running Linux on an HP
Pavilion, to hear if they've got any stories to tell. I'd rather go for
option number one, but there's only one left in the shop, and it may be
gone before I get back to it.

Thanks in advance for any help that you may have for me.

I can't speak to the specific issue of the HP, but I thought I might
point out that in some cases setting up a machine for dual-boot will
void your support contract from the OEM.  You might want to check on
this.  IOW, if you buy the HP, it may come with a support contract
from HP; but HP may consider that contract void if you reconfigure the
machine to dual boot or to boot any other OS than what comes
installed.

I don't have any first hand experience running Linux on HP boxes, but
my general experience with HP is they make gear that is high quality
but expensive.

You may also want to consider the possibility of getting a box mail
order or at a computer show; there are plenty of places that will
custom-build a machine to your specs, at a very attractive price.
Also, if you buy a prepacked HP system, you'll probably be paying
extra for a Microsoft OS that you won't even be using.

No experience with HP's and Linux, but I *will* say that running a Linux
box, the main thing you need is full knowledge of your hardware on a
component-by-component basis.  If you're planning on a full Linux
installation, you may want to consider building rather than buying - that
way you know precisely, piece by piece, what hardware is in your machine
and you have the upfront knowledge that it's all designed to run well
under Linux.  Good luck to you.

If you don't want Winbloze at all, try getting your new system from
http://www.linux-hw.com They'll sell you a  PII/ 266 with a 3.2GB hd and
RedHat Linux already installed for under $1000 according to their web site.
Can't hurt to look, can it? Also, LSL http://www.lsl.com is advertising a
Linux system for under $1000 as well. http://www.lsl.com . Their system is a
64Mb, 8.4 Gb HD, 300Mhz AMD. Why pay *anything* to Microsoft?

DISCLAIMER - I haven't bought anything from either of these companies. I
don't work for either of them either. I just saw their Web sites.

Might as well tack on VA research: http://www.varesearch.com/.

1. Old machine Tomcat+SSL, new machine Apache+SSL - new certificates needed?

A new customer of ours uses Tomcat+SSL on their current machine.
I've set up a new machine for them using Apache+SSL, however I'm
unclear about migrating certificates.  Is that possible or do I have to
go back to the CA and generate a new set?  I don't see anything like
server.crt and server.key in their Tomcat+SSL setup.  It has .csr and
.cer files.
