printer takes sweet time before printing

I'll send a job to the printer (lpr), lpq says the printer is printing
but nothing happens, 15 minutes later, the printer will start printing.
I have a Canon 4400.
I've installed the Canon 600 / 4000 printer filter from the control
panel.

Does the lpd poll?  Can you set the polling period. I though it was
spawned whenever kmod needed the daemon.

I am not familiar with the Canon 4000 but is it a Postscript printer?  If
not, then some time is taken writing the postscript file and then for
Ghostscript to convert it to raster.  How big is the file you are printing
and how fast is the system?  Is the file plain text or is it a document you
are printing with an application?  There could be a lot of variables.
