netscape problem

Post by silverb.. » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I have linux redhat 6.2 and kde
when I start up netscape , either from command line or by icon , I find
that a blank netscape window shows up and it  is a long time before all
the netscape features are visible . so I just have to sit for a long
time.
but suppose I remove the .netscape directory , the browser starts up
relatively fast. now I have made sure that the cache is not affecting
performance . Any suggestions
thanks in advance

Do you have the Mozilla home environment variable set in your profile or other login file?

netscape problem

I have had this problem as well however I managed to "defeat" it by turning
off DNS resolution. I know that this isn't a very good way of doing things.
Looking at the freshmeat comments page someone commented that you may be
able to set an environment variable MOZILLA_NO_ASYNC_DNS to false and
possibly alleviate this problem.

IMHO Netscape is no good. Have a try of Mozilla, you may be pleasantly
suprised!

netscape problem

sandy,

This sounds like the issue of Netscape opening up, but you can't see any
menu items, no icons at the bottom right, etc.  Completely blank screen
for several minutes or more.

This is caused by having incorrect networking/routing happening on your
box.  I can't tell you where your issue is precisely, because I can't
see your configuration.

When you get your routing correct, this will disappear, and your
Netscape will come on (correctly), in several seconds.  My laptop is old
and fairly slow, 133mHz, and it takes about 15 seconds for it to come
up, assuming I have the setup configured correctly.  It can take six
minutes or more, when things are mucked up.

When netscape is up and running, go into the preferences and set it to
either start with a blank start page, or a local page on your hard
drive.  If it's a local page, be aware that incorrect networking/routing
will cause the same issue again.

To correct the issue, ensure that all pertinent data regarding
networking/routing is correct.

Additionally, you might want to eliminate the "*" Netscape splash
screen  which has all of the "commercials".  Locate the Netscape.ad
file on your system, open the file, seach within the file for the word

splash

and you'll be at the line in this config file which you can change to
eliminate it's starting with the splash screen.

Regards,

Valentin Guillen
