Netscape either causes my system to hang or completely kills the X
server. I need to know of any other web browsers that are available.

So, are there any?

I use it regularly. Don't know if it is ready for prime time. But, I
have never had it crash X or system. It does have a habit of
disappearing for no reason though. No java support yet (maybe not a bad
thing), at least that I can tell. Some other limitations too. Seems to
do a great job of rendering. Plenty of minor quirks. Has support for
skins, which is nice. I don't use mail/news in either, but have a feeling
that mozilla is little more behind in that department. But then again, I
don't have that many problems with NS. I think most crashes are java
related -- at least here.

As a tip: turn off Java, don't run it as root, and learn the dubious merits
of killall -9 netscape. Oh, and repeatedly swear at it, it doesn't help but
it makes you feel better.

Upcoming/beta/in development:

Opera
Netscape 6
Mozilla
Konquorer

Available right now:

lynx (text based)
w3m (text based)
links (text based)
Mosaic/Arena/Chimera (old and a bit duff GUI browsers)
Upgrade your version of Netscape (latest is 4.73, though I'm sure it's
getting worse now...)

So, if you want an up to date and stable alternative to Netscape you've
either got to wait or be prepared to put a little (or a lot) of work into
using pre-release software. A text based one could do, depends what you're
looking at, w3m/links are really quite good.

It sucks, I know. Currently No.1 Linux gripe atm I would think.

If you have VMware, I'd load up Win9x/NT/2K inside it and run Internet
Explorer.  (IE's the main reason I forked out the $100 for VMware...that,
and the occasional need for pcAnywhere and MS Money.)

If that's not an option, kfm does a reasonable job with simple pages.
There's always Lynx, too.

Can't find this option.

That's what I figured.

Yep, learned that one too.

I have Java turned off all the time unless something specifically needs it
for my viewing. Which only happens once in a blue moon. Could probably do
the same with Javascript, though that seems to be used more.

The philosophy being: the less things it's running the less chance there is
of one of them*ing up.

Even so, NS is still one crazily wobbly browser.

1. Non Netscape Proxy between Netscape Commerce Server & Netscape Browser

When trying to access http://www.internet.net/ we received the following
error within Netscape:

Error 400
Invalid request "CONNECT www.internet.net:443 HTTP/1.0" (unknown method)

When accessing the page through Mosaic we get the page without any errors!

Looking further into this, we realized that the http site was using a Netsite-Commerce/1.0 server.  Another note is internally we access the outside
world using a proxy server(CERN). On further investigation, we realized
that our environment variable in Netscape, Security Proxy, was set to our
proxy server.  Yet our proxy server (CERN) does not offer any of the
security methods.

How can we enable the CERN Proxy server to be able to pass through Netscapes security queries?  Any information would be helpful!

                        Vicki.
