Loopback: setting up /dev/loop*?

Loopback: setting up /dev/loop*?

Post by Frank Mil » Tue, 22 Apr 1997 04:00:00

I have recompiled my Debian 1.2.4/2.0.29 kernel to include a loopback
device.  However it appears that it is necessary to set up devices
/dev/loop0,... in order to use loopback (I want to mount a file).

Could someone kindly direct me to the documentation describing how to
set up these devices?  Thanks...

Your MAKEDEV script should support making the loopback devices.  If not,
the BOOTDISK Howto says that you can get an updated script from
ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/sources/sbin.  You will also need
mount/umount binaries that support loopback devices.  Again, according
to the HOWTO, they may be found at
ftp://ftp.win.tue.nl:/pub/linux/util/.

Try (being root):

cd /dev
./MAKEDEV loop
