netscape plugins in linux

I am using rvplayer5.0 with netscape 4.5beta, I also used it with
netscape 4.06.  I have Redhat 5.0.  I put copies of the RA*.class files
into my ~/.netscape/plugin directory, with a link to the executable
there also.

My setup within netscape for the plugin is:

Description: <blank>
MIME Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin
Suffixes: <blank>

Plugin Checked:  Selection - RealVideo Player plugin

My setup for the external call is:

Description:  RealAudio
MIME Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio
Suffixes: ra,ram,rm

Application:  /usr/bin/rvplayer %s

Also, my dist of rvplayer came with documentation.  Check the
rvplayer5.0/doc directory.

Good luck.  My friend gave up trying to get his to run.  As reference,
I did not install netscape or rvplayer5.0 from rpm's.

netscape plugins in linux

First off the realplayer plugin is VERY shakey.  Real Player works much
better when setup as a helper app rather than a plugin.

One of the problems I ran into getting my plugin to work was that netscape
was not finding one of the required libc files even though its directory
was listed in ld.so.conf.  I wound up making a link from the /lib directory
to that file which finally made the plugin show up, but it still did not
work reliably.

I have now upgraded to the Netscape 4.5 beta.  I'm running RedHat 5.1 with
the 2.0.35 kernel and the latest Real Player client (NOT the one that is
packaged as an RPM, but the generic linux one).  This setup works better,
but the plugin is still not one hundred percent reliable.

Hope this helps.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It worked great. the tild (~) thing you mentioned wasn't the problem, but a
typo in my message. The problem was that in my setup for external call,
I left out the %s at the end of the app line.

I did have one problem.... I got it to work in 4.06, but 4.07 still won't
see the plugin as even being there. No biggy... I can manage with 4.06 for
quite a while, and I could probably get 4.07 to work if I tried some more.

Thank you again.

1. netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz for Netscape 6.1 ppc?

Netscape was inviting me to download
what they called
Netscape 6.1 English language, X11 Linux 2.2.18-4hpmac ppc.

What eventually came down the line was
netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz.

Which I stopped very quickly.

Any comments?
