secure way to ftp?

secure way to ftp?

Post by Greg Herlei » Wed, 24 Jun 1998 04:00:00

I'm using ssh now for all my telnet sessions.  However, I sometimes need
to use ftp.  Sometimes I can ssh to the target and then ftp back, which
provides encryption for that link and keeps my password from getting
sniffed.

However, sometimes I can't do that - like when I'm on a host that's
behind an IP masquerading gateway, so that I can ssh out, but not connect
back to the specific host from outside... or when I'm behind a firewall
that allows outgoing ssh connects, but not incoming ftp connects...

So, here's my question:  is there a replacement for ftp (like ssh
replaced telnet) that I can use instead?

1. Secure ftp, ftp over stunnel og ftp-ssl.

Hi.

I'm looking for a secure way to offer ftp services to my users. Many users
have asked for the ftp-service, but since it will be the only uncryptated
service on my server i have refused to set it up.

Is there any way to use stunnel or any other app to cryptate the
control-connection of the ftp? cryptating data isn't the most important in
this scenario, but i need to make passwords and usernames unavailable in
regards of sniffing etc.

Can someone please help.
A few pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Chris
