Q: taper-6.7.4 child segfault

Q: taper-6.7.4 child segfault

Post by Marko Jahn » Wed, 23 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Hi there,
Taper's version 6.7.4 seemed to be very stable, but since I use archives
bigger than a single tape, I get the message "write child seg faulted"
when the end of a medium is reached. I think the tape's header is not
written correctly, too.

( I read the docs, I changed the libc/binutils and I tried different ftape
and zftape versions, but the failure is still there )

Is there someone who uses taper successfully with multiple tape archives on
a floppy tape drive ?

Thanx in advance.
Marko

Same thing here - btw, in case anyone is trying the taper RPM on RedHat 4.0,
it won't work; the bg_backup/bg_restore programs are missing from the RPM.

But even with that fixed, the "write child segfaulted" message pops up
when it is about time to switch to the second volume.

2.0 kernel, ftape, libc 5.3.12.

At least you can GET it to compile. Holes are all over that code when
it comes to such things as ncurses versions. Then I FINALLY got the
static version to compile only to find it crashing on ANY other system
I run it on... all in all, I am not impressed with it to date! Sent
the author MANY emails but no response, no one is home.

Home rolled scripts work better than taper any day!

1. taper-6.7.4 backup error: "Write child seg faulted"

I am running linux2.0.17, zftape 1.06 (with patch zftape-1.06-1.06a.dif)
and taper-6.7.4. My tape drive is a Conner 250MB/420MB Internal
Minicartridge Drive (I couldn't seem to find the model number), and
I'm using a QIC-WIDE (QW5122F) tape.

I selected a single filesystem (/home) for backup, and it's size
was determined to be:
"Selected files 394,913K"
"   I    394,913K /home/ "

After selecting this, taper then: "Adding to archive directory..."
Taper then starts the backup, but never makes it to writing to the tape:
"Write child seg faulted"

"tail taper_log" shows:

Fri Sep 13 18:14:06 1996:  Storing directory /home/tsg/nsmail/
Fri Sep 13 18:14:06 1996:  Backing up file /home/tsg/.addressbook;

Fri Sep 13 18:14:21 1996:  Write child seg faulted
Fri Sep 13 18:16:14 1996:  Backup finished.

Any ideas what might be causing this, or what I need to investigate
to track down the problem?

Thanks in advance,
Dave
