Compiler kernel 1.2.1....please help

Post by Glenn Jayapute » Tue, 11 Apr 1995 04:00:00

I had just installed Linux 1.2.1 that comes w/ slackware 2.2
I need to compile the kernel because I am using MS bus mouse.  After
checking the file busmouse.h, I then go to dir /usr/src/linux.

After that I ran 'make config' and then did 'make dep' and 'make clean'
subsequently.  But I got the following error.

gcc: Internal compiler error: program cc1 got fatal signal 11
make[2]: ***[ip.o] error 1

I think when it tries to compile ip.c
I just got no clue what went wrong, I did not touch this ip.c file
I am using DX4/100 with 32Mbyte memory.  2HDs, one is 340M the other is 245M.
I got around 80Mbyte free on the drive where I put all my linux stuff
(/dev/hda,  /dev/hdb is mounted to /user  for users directory)

Can somebody shed me some light??  What is going on and where can I find
more thorough error explantion.  'got fatal signal 11' does not mean
anything to me.

thanks in advance
Glenn

Well after hinted by a number of people, I managed to solve the problem.
It is becuase of the memory problem.  I push the system too hard, I need
to insert 1 wait state to 'READ DRAM' setup.  I have now managed to
compile the kernel.

I had a similar problem when I first tried compiling a kernel with my new
motherboard/CPU. Someone suggested I turn off the onboard cache (from the
CMOS setup) and that seems to fix it (and a few other things that caused
kernel panics and other fatal errors) - I have an ACER motherboard and BIOS.

On my system, if I boot into DOS with the cache enabled, it increases
the speed by a VERY noticable amount (without it, Doom runs as if on a
386sx as opposed to my 486/33) This is also reported as a speed increase
of about 10x by some benchmark testers. Hoever, it doesn't seem to make
any speed difference under Linux. Go figure.

1. HELP: COMPILER QUESTION (PLEASE HELP)

Hi everyone, I am an intermediate level user of unix, I have the
following problem:

I have a file that contains a function written in C code. the C function
call a subroutine written in FORTRAN. The C function is in turn called
by a commercial package that requires me to provide the object code of
the C function. For the sake of argument, let's the C function. Cfunct
and the fortran subroutine Fsub. I use the following command to get the
object code for the Cfile:

cc -c Cfile.c
this command build the object code Cfile.o

Now I would like to link Cfile.o to a library file libFile.a that
contains the object code of the fortran subroutine Fsub and produce an
object code that combines the two into a single object file that I can
submit to commercial package.

What I really want to know is that if you have 2 object files Objfile1.o
and Objfile2.o how can you combine them into a single file Objfile.o?

Your help with question is greatly appreciated

Thank you.
