RedHat Linux 4.1 kernel 2.0.27.....

Post by Brad Jone » Tue, 07 Jul 1998 04:00:00

I am not totally brilliant here:) I manuall changed the file messages in
/var/log I copied it to a back file then using emacs made a new blank file
called messages, now linux doesn't write to the log at all, I attempted
using the touch /var/log/messages command and it didn't work either. Can
someone please tell me how to fix this as soon as possible? All and any help
is GREATLY appreciated.

TIA,
Brad

Running "logrotate" manually should solve your troubles with not being
able to write to /var/log/messages.

On another note, it is a good idea to upgrade to RedHat 4.2 if you can.
RedHat 4.2 is a bug/security upgrade of 4.1, and can be found with the
books "Discover Linux" and "RedHat Linux Unleashed", both available at
Amazon.  You can also download it form a RedHat mirror, if you have the
bandwidth and/or patience.

I downloaded all of Slackware several times myself. At $1.99 for
RedHat 5.1 at Cheapbytes it is no longer logical to spend all that
time downloading.
I checked the UPS site and my RedHat has arrived, can't wait,
I should have it tomorrow.

$1.99 for RedHat 5.1
$4.99 for 3 CDs of Linux misc software
$15.00 for the official RedHat 5.1 book
You get a bundle discount when buying several packages.

Total was $26.99 with UPS ground shipping.

1. RedHat Linux 4.1 Kernel 2.0.27

Hello all, I have a server problem, it hangs at times, we are running a web
server and email server from it with a dedicated dial-up, it stays connected
but doesn't get out. When this happens, the phone is still connected, we can
usually ping provider but nowhere else, a reboot fixes the problem, probably
a kill and reconnect would but reboot is easier. Any suggestions as to what
and why this is happening and a good way to fix it?
