Hmmm.... welll, I haven't been able to compile a kernel with a version
number earlier than 1.3.40 or so on my Slackware 3.0.0 system. The
kernels probably need an a.out compiler to compile instead of the
included elf compiler, but I am just guessing here.
There are 2 kernels on the k disk series which are patched to work
with ELF. the first one is 1.2.13, the other one, I think, is 1.3.21
or somewhere there.
OTOH, if you can't compile a kernel. there is sometimes something seriously
wrong with your hardware, and it's time to get new hardware.
no, no, this does not apply here ;).
You may also wish to try another version of gcc, such as gcc-2.6.3, but
that maight not do the trick.
I don't think 2.6.3 can produce ELF executables under Linux.
