XFree86's Xconfig: vertical sync problem -- PLEASE!

Post by Sergei Naoum » Mon, 15 Aug 1994 01:01:37

Hey, folks!
There is a bit of a problem with either my monitor or my Xconfig. I
have a Oak oti077 based card with 1M videoram and it should work
just fine -- I know. What I want is to force it working under 65MHz
dot-clock, although it seems I'm having difficulties. Here they are.

        - Monochrome server works ok except that I'm having  a little
garbage (snow-like) on the screen when moving windows.

        - 16 color server does not have these problems but it has a
different one: two images are overlapped vertically. They
          look like this:

                        +---------------+
                        |               |
                        |               |  <- First image
                        +...............+
                        |               |  <- Second image
                        |               |
                        +---------------+
the images are identical but shifted vertically one with respect
to another, so it looks like there is a second ghost.

        - 256 color server does not work. Well, it works but images are
now "spread" horizontally: I have five of them.

So, could someone, please, explain me what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you very much in advance,

                        Sergei

It sounds like your Xconfig is completely off.  Where did you get your
ModeDB settings from?  I would advise you against using X until you resolve
this since you can do severe damage to your monitor.  What I recommend
is to download the mkxconfig util from sunsite and it will build you a
decent Xconfig file.

Well, I can't really damage a monitor as it's a mulisync, and I do not
clock it above the bandwidth. However, I suspect that 65.40 that the
card gives and 65 that monitor allows to go all together give me some
sort of a "side effect".

I made mine with ConfigXF86

I have been running my WD90C33 on the 16VGA server until lately when I
found an SVGA server which could handle the WD90C33.

On the 16VGA I experienced the same problem with overlapping images. It
happens when you use an aspect ratio which is different from 4:3 - for
example when using a higher dot clock but keeping the same horisontal syns.

I tried the same on the SVGA server, and it didn't overlap the images,
so I guess the problem is caused by a bug in the 16VGA server.

1. Problem with Xconfig. (monitor can't sync..)

Hi all..  I am having problems with my open win.  I can seem to get
the right numbers to make my monitor work.  I tried all sort of different
configs but nothing.  I am using an ATI Graphics Ultra + (mach 32) and
a cheapo interlaced monitor.  I try using xclk with all the different
configs finally came up with one that sort of works.  (well I get a picture)
instead of a high pitch sound.  But the pictures is overlapped side by
side.  here is my config
"1024x768" 45  1024 1040 1216 1264  768 777 785 817.
If anybody have a fixed monitor and got 1024 to work please help me....
thanks...
                         Dan
P.S.  I haven't got 640 or 800 to work either..  But I am only interested
in 1024x768.
