/var/spool/mail perms 1777 !?

Post by Matthias Bodenbind » Wed, 21 Jan 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

thanks for all the people answering my question about the permissions for
/var/spool/mail.

It was suggested to set them to 1777 in order to allow mailreaders like
pine or tkrat to create a mail.lock file. I wonder if this is the best
solution. Doesnt this mean that every user could misuse the
/var/spool/mail directory as a tmp directory?

Is it possible to achieve the same goal with a special group to which
/var/spool/mail and the mailreader belong or has this other sideeffects?

Just curious,
Matthias
