Bus Error

Bus Error

Post by Stephen Mar » Tue, 17 Jun 1997 04:00:00

I may be stupid, but everytime I try to run Netscape and do something,
it closes and I get a STUPID "bus error". What the heck is a bus error?

I'm running RedHat 3.03 and everything works except Netscape 3.01 - which
won't run - I get a message saying Bus Error and that it can't find the
color map for default colors.

Any ideas? I'd appreciate any help at all here.

Though I don't know the answer, this is a familiar question about
Netscape; a search on DejaNews should reveal the answer...

Not much help to your specific problem, but according to "Advanced
Programming in the Unix Environment", by Stephens,

"SIGBUS - This indicates an implementation-defined hardware fault".

Now you know what it is, you need to find out why it's happening.

Your first step might be to run the 'strace' command, ie.

your-prompt>strace netscape

You'll then get a load of output. It's probably the last page or so that
you're interested in. If you're lucky, you'll see it trying to do
something, and then failing. Then you might be able to fix it (or not).

Good luck.

Nope ! A modern definition should be something like freeing
memory already free... You should take a look at:

Be Well !
