How to view a .avi file?

Post by Jonathan M Hi » Fri, 16 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Hello;

     I came accross some .avi files. I think this is motion video of
some kind, but I don't know what or how to view the files.  Does anyone
know of a viewer that I can use to display this file format?

                                        Thanks in advance;

There is a motion video format called avi.  The old standby for viewing
them is xanim.  But some compression methods are not available to xanim so
it may not work on the files you have in mind.

If you have KDE installed you can try "aKtion"... the problem with avi is that
there are lots of "standards"... aKtion may not be able to read them all...

Hope this helps,

Hello;

     Thanks for the suggestions.  Another friend also suggested xanim.
I downloaded and built it and was able to watch.  The file I have in mind
is a home-spun video clip about eight seconds long.  The video demonstrates
a skating flip jump, very smooth.  I'll have to ask how the file was
produced. The xanim program is supposed to have audio as well, but I
don't know if the file contains audio.

                                             Thanks again;
