I get no sound whenever trying to play Diehard 3 with (the latest and
greatest mplayer).  Other DVD titles play just fine (there's sount). Any
suggestions about fixing it besides watching something else?

Not sure, this is the problem, but I once had problems of no sound with
mplayer, with .mov files, not with dvd tho, so I was recommended to
install libfaad library and it fixed it. The name is libfaad.so.0

If you installed by rpm, most likely it would have installed this
library, I just installed it few days back.

Does your dvd play well, with Xine or Ogle maybe?

HOpe it helps,
