problems with chat (the modem login script thingy)

according to the man pages (and a book I have) something like this

chat "" ATZ OK ATDT6669999

should send ATZ to the modem, when OK comes back, it should dial ATDT6669999
however, all it does is send ATZ but nothing ever comes back.  I can use the
modem just find under minicom, and I have it set for the right COM port and
everything.  Anyone have any clues? please cc email. thanks

For what its worth, I have faced exactly the same problem with this CHAT.
It brings back ATZ and just sits there.

It dialed once or twic I think,  The it fails.  No sounds from the modem,
no dialing nothing.

I gave up on it.  I am using Minicom to dial out.  I suggest you do the
same and get Robert Hart's Howto on setting up PPP if that is what you
want to do.

Try my 'call_em'.  It works with the uucp HDB configuration files and
allows more than one line to call out on or to call out to.  To initiate a
connection you need only enter "call_em -ssystem".

This is part of a collection of serial utilities and serial port
configuration information files.

You can get the collection via ftp from 'scicom.alphacdc.com'.  The file is
'pub/linux/serial_suite.tgz'.  Login as anonymous then give your complete
e-mail address as the password.

Sounds to me like a configuration problem - perhaps the wrong IRQ set for the
port. What does 'setserial /dev/cua?' report for the configuration?

I'm having this same problem..  Chat just doesn't seem to work..  All
the other comm programs will dial out except chat.

Keep in mind that 'chat' doesn't have anything to do with the modem!
It is just a program used by some other task to execute a dialog.

Which program is *really* using the modem??

To "test" chat
use

chat -v "" ATZ OK < /dev/ttyS1 > /dev/ttyS1

or whever your modem is.
You MUST redirect input and output away from standard input and output.
pppd does this for you when you specify what port it is to use with the options

PeterJordan (3 or 4th time I've answered this)

1. PPP/CHAT: chat won't chat with modem, why?

I've been trying to get a dynamic IP connection to work via ppp, and I
think I've narrowed the problem down to the chat program.  chat
doesn't seem to be getting any responses from the modem.  I've been
trying to figure out what's going on by running chat from the command
line (can this work?), but no luck.  For example,

gives the following error messages:

Mar  9 11:43:49 rezkbox chat[1285]: timeout set to 3 seconds
Mar  9 11:43:49 rezkbox chat[1285]: send (^MAT^M^M)
Mar  9 11:43:49 rezkbox chat[1285]: expect (OK)
Mar  9 11:43:52 rezkbox chat[1285]: alarm
Mar  9 11:43:52 rezkbox chat[1285]: send (+++)
Mar  9 11:43:52 rezkbox chat[1285]: expect (OK)
Mar  9 11:43:55 rezkbox chat[1285]: alarm
Mar  9 11:43:55 rezkbox chat[1285]: Failed

I really don't know what's going on.  I'm also a bit confused about
the chat program; it's supposed to communicate with the modem, but how
does it even know which serial port the modem is on?

Any ideas?
