Browsing Problem

Browsing Problem
Using : Mandrake8.1, KDE, KPPP

I am able to connect perfectly, with no problems,
but I am unable to browse or download e-mail.
I have put both DNS server IP's in, that were given to me by my ISP.
I even connected to another ISP, but had the same problem.
My modem works fine with Windows so I've ruled a modem problem out.
Can anyone give me a clue to what the problem could be?

Glendon.

Hi, Glendon:

Can you ping to somewhere on the 'net?  Try pinging one of these addresses:

www.yahoo.com: 216.115.102.78
www.netscape.net: 207.200.89.225

If it works, it could be DNS.  If it doesn't, it's something else.

Glendon,
Where did you put the information that your ISP gave you?  Usually, when
there is a problem resolving domain names it is because there are no
entries in resolv.conf, or the entries are incorrect.  How are you you so
sure that you are actually getting a connection?  If you run tail -f
/var/log/messages, the attempt the connection, you will see if the
connection is being made.  Since the modem works fine with windows, the
other problem may be that it is a winmodem.  Good luck trying to get that
to work, although there are some with drivers available for Linux.

1. SAMBA Browsing Problem

Hi,

I am using samba 1.9.18p8 and I have the follwing problem:
I do not see the samba server in my workgroup.
I have only three Windows NT4 (SP3) clients.
The clients see themselves, but not the samba server.
The samba acts as WINS Server and all Clients
have the IP set to it as primary wins server.
Of course I can use the services (only two printers)
that are running on the samba server.
In a DOS Box "net view \\server" works probably.

what is rong? Below you see my smb.conf.

Greetings from SveN
