Well, I don't know of any pre-written packages to do what you want,
partially because thumbnails are largely a matter of taste.  However,
there is a package of utilities, the NetPBM package, which will
include all the tools you'll need to do what you want.  Basically,
you'll convert a package to a ppm (portable pixmap), scale the pixmap
and reduce the colors used, then convert the pixmap back to your
preferred package type.. You can generally pipe the various utilities
through, and turn it into a script that will manage it to your laste.
But that's definitely where I'd start.

Okay,

Just spent the last 1.5 hours searching the net for a utility which I'm
pretty sure exists out there.  Basically, I have several hundred jpeg
files which I would like to convert into thumbnail images to use for html
pages.  So far I've only been able to find graphic packages/software that
create 'albums' with thumbnails of the images, which is _not_ what I
want.  I want to _convert_ these images into individual jpeg thumbnails.

I didn't find anything to this effect in the LSM (but then again, how
current is it?).  I would prefer a Linux based utility, but I'm willing
to reboot into WinDoze for a one time batch processing of these images.

Again, I'm looking for a utility to 'convert', or 'create', _individual_
thumbnail images from all jpeg images in a given directory.

TIA

Wil

Have you tried resizing using xv.

This is just an idea so don't flame if it sounds stupid.

Thanks for the info.  I found Thumbsplus from Cerious software.  Runs
under WinDoze platform.  I started an overnight batch job that did what I
needed.

1. Image Map/Thumbnail creator to reduce server load...

I'm trying to speed up the access for my server.

I've got 50 thumbnails on a page and they load too slow.

What I need is software to let create a big image that has
thumbnails on it but it is a big image map that links to the
individual images.

This will load for the user much faster and will be less
impact on the server itself.

Obviously I don't want to hand code this.
Any suggestions for software (Solaris or PC or Mac)???

Thanks,
Gary
