I have slackware 3.00 installed.

Someone sent me what looks to be a microsoft word file encoded using
some base 64 technique. Can someone tell me what (UNIX) tools I should
use to get this into an actual MSword file?

The header info at the start of the text is as follows:

Content-Type: application/msword; name="XXX.DOC";
x-mac-type="42494E41"; x-mac-creator="4D535744"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="XXX.DOC"

Try metamail.
It=B4s most probably installed on your system.
