I need a program that can send a short message or file via smtp
from the command line or a shell script. (I don't run sendmail.)
Anyone know of such a beast?

`mail' will do this.

Really?  I thought that "mail" required an MTA like sendmail to
be available.  I didn't think that "mail" could talk to an SMTP
server.

If you do want a simple SMTP mail-sending-program, take a look
at ssmtp.  You can send messages directly with ssmtp (you have
to create headers yourself), but it might be easier to set up
"sendmail" as a link to ssmtp and then use "mail" or "mutt" or
some other MUA to send messages.

I put one together in Perl a couple of days ago (I neededto do exactly this !) -
it took about 30 minutes.  Email me if you want a copy.
