"module-info,kernel.h," after compiling kernel?

I am configuring an IBM T21 with RedHat 7.1.

I have a question concerning the kernel. I have compiled kernel 2.4.5
for my system. (I had to because of suspend problems.)  What to do with
System.map, module-info, kernel.h files in the /boot directory???? Do I
need to change them every time I create a new kernel? Or is this not

What I did is the following.

make xconfig
make dep
make bzImage

make modules
make modules_install

copy the bzImage to /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.5
cp /usr/src/linux/System.map /boot/System.map-2.4.5
ln -s -f vmlinuz-2.4.5 vmlinuz
ln -s -f System.map-2.4.5 System.map

changed /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo.

It seems to work OK, but what to do if I want to switch to another
compiled kernel or an old kernel.
Can somebody explain what kernel.h, module-info, System.map do?
I can't find anything on the web about it.

1. Compiled new kernel but old "module-info" file

In RH 6.1 I compiled a new kernel, copied it into /boot, vi'd lilo.conf,
and ran lilo. In /boot there's a "module-info" link pointing to
module-info-2.2.12-20, the old kernel rev. Should I have a new
module-info file? I don't see one under /usr/src/linux or
/usr/lib/modules. I'm wondering if I'm pointing to old modules or the
new ones. (I think I lost some old modules - eth0, lp0, sound - so I'm
hoping to use the newly compiled ones).

Thanks for any suggestions!
