newbie cannot connect to net with mandrake9

Sometimes i get to connect with my Mandrake 9 box, and other times not.
Almost all of the time i get "connected" to the net, but can't do anything.
KPPP dials and docks to the panel. When i click on details, it shows me
that i have a local and remote ip.It also shows some minimal bites sent
and received.
Problem is i can't open any pages or connect to mail server.
Problem with DNS?

But then, other times it work  - usually i have to open up Mandrake
Control Center > Connection, and set up my LAN and modem with the
wizard, and when they ask to test the connection, i do that.
Maybe this is just by chance.

Tried a few times again this morning. The one time i got connected after
doing the wizard thing, the wizard gave me the following message:

"Problems occured during configuration.
Test your connection via net_monitor or mc. If your connection doesn't work,
you might want to relaunch the configuration."

I could still open pages, so i didn't mind.
Later when i tried to open a new page, konqueror gave me:

"An error occured while loading http://www.justlinux.com/:
Unknown host www.justlinux.com"

So i disconnected and ran the wizard again.
It appeared to "connect" again, but this time i received the following
from the wizard, and wasn't able to do anything:

"The system doesn't seem to be connected to internet.
Try to reconfigure your connection."

I use the ip of 131.107.2.2 with subnet of 255.255.0.0.
I configured my DNS and gateway as 127.0.0.1 in the wizard.

I was able to connect with kppp and redhat 7.2

thanx allot
Jaco

Did you configure the /etc/resolv.conf file and put the ISP's DNS
in it?

nameserver  xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx   # primary DNS  IP
nameserver  xxx.xxx.xxx.xx     # secondary DNS  IP

1. newbie RH7.1 cannot connect to net

I am new to linux.  I just installed RH7.1 workstation on a computer with a
single new hard drive.  The installation seemed to go OK until I realized
that I could not connect to the internet.  The computer is on my home
network that has several windows PCs connected through a hub.  The hub is
connected to a dsl connection with a cell pipe router.  The windows machines
have not trouble browsing the web.  I can ping to the RH7.1 machine from the
windows boxes and visa versa, but the RH&.1 box cannot connect to anything
outside our home network.  I am reasonably confident that I put in the
correct IP, netmask, gateway, DNS server information.  Does anyone have a
suggestion for something to try.
