perl 5 for rh 4.2?

perl 5 for rh 4.2?

Post by Peter Flyn » Wed, 16 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I'm having major problems compiling perl5.anything for RH 4.2.
It blows up on all kinds of missing functions even though I
have installed every library in sight.

The only RPM available seems to be src: has anyone ever
managed to get it to compile, and is there a statically-
linked binary out there somewhere?

1. Strange experience going RH 4.0 --> RH 4.2

Hi there!

I am not sure if this is the right newsgroup for my question...
However, here we go:

I have a small C code I use as a floating point benchmark (it's just
for me, the code was posted on usenet a couple of month ago).
Compiling that code under RedHat 4.0 and running it gave, say,
24 MFLOPS on my P-133 (stock RH 4.0 kernel 2.0.18).
In the meantime I upgraded to RH 4.2 and tried the egcs compiler
over the weekend to see if it improves my 'bench results'.

I had to realize a performance drop. On RH 4.2 I get about 6 MFLOPS
running the code that was compiled on RH 4.0 (by that time I used
a self built gcc-2.7.2.1/g77-0.5.19). That is 1/4 of the previous
performance just when changing the OS version.
Compiling the code with the new compiler gave marginal better results
but far away from 24 MFLOPS.

Any ideas what can cause this performance drop?

Along with RH 4.2 I installed a third hard disk, a SB-16 compatible
sound card (Terratec Base 1), and an Iomega Ditto 3200 floppy tape
drive). The new drivers are compiled as modules.
Just to check if it's a kernel issue, I installed the plain RH 4.0
kernel and modules and it showed the same performance drop.

Yes, I checked that both caches are enabled.
And, strange enough, Matlab does NOT show a performance drop on that
machine.

So, what's happening?

Greetings, Ralf

ps: The next thing I will do is removing the sound card just to see
    what's happening...
