login without password ???

Post by Karel.DeBruy » Fri, 06 Jun 1997 04:00:00

Hi,

I've got this problem :

I want to setup an account on a Redhat 4.1 PC-based system. This account would be used to check the status of a fax modem on this system.

in /etc/passwd :
faxstat::66:66:Fax status:/tmp:/usr/local/bin/faxstatus

So, I can login without a password. However the system always asks for the
password. Pressing return is enough (empty password).
How can I stop the system asking for the password (as in Solaris/Ultrix/...)
if an account hasn't got a password?

I tried to install another login program (poeigl), and this helps for telnet
but not for rsh.

Can anyone help me ?

1. rshd and friends - remote logins without password

Hi there,

I have a Pentium box running a Slackware Linux setup and I'd like to
rsh and rexec to another identical Pentium Linux box. However, I always
get connection failed. Also rlogin continues to ask for a password even
with a valid .rhosts. I know it's valid 'cos I can rlogin to an HP
server without password verification with an equivalent .rhosts file. I
have read the manual pages and tried to set up /etc/hosts.equiv,
/etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny to no avail.

What I'd like to know is: are the vanilla in.rshd etc compiled to be
this paranoid, or have I missed something?

Thanks in advance.
