Newbie Problems

Post by C G Earnsha » Tue, 17 Dec 1996 04:00:00

I know this isn't the corrct Linux group to post this to, but it's the
only Linux group that Durham Uni carries, please forgive me.

I've just installed Linux on my machine and have problems with two points
that I can't find an answer to :

1) I can't mount my DOS file system to get files from. I have two hard
drives on my machine, c and D, linux is installed on D and runs no
problem, but when I try nd 'mount -t msdos /dev/hda1 /mnt' it complains
that ths file system is not the correct type. Is this something to do with
Win95?

2) How can you change the default fonts under XFree386? I want to try and
get the X windows equivilent of Windows small fonts, ie just a much
smaller font than the standard is. Again I cannot find a solution to this
in my manual.

Any help would be wonderful....

Craig!

try to 'cat /proc/filesystems' to see if your kernel support msdos
partitions.

Considering the mention of Win95, another possibility is that the "DOS
file system" in question is actually FAT32 rather than (V)FAT.

1. Not a newbie, but with a newbie problem (startx fails error 2)

Gee, I'm embarrassed. I built my whole damn pre-R5 system, had it up and
going with GNOME and everything, and foolishly decided I could rebuild the
install to make a cleaner system.
Now, I am encountering an early problem I didn't have before. I have
directed my "X" link towards the XFree68_FBDev (which worked before), but
now it fails with error2. I checked the permissions, and have executed it
by itself (X loads fine), but can't firgure out what;s wrong.
   Help?
