Networking with Linux kernel 1.0*****

I recently upgraded my kernel to 1.0 from pl13.  I have also
previously ftp'd the NET-2-* package but never installed it.

My question: Do I still need to install NET-2-*?
How can I tell if I have network stuff installed already?
             Is NET-2-* current or superced?

1. Upgrading 0.99.14 kernel to 1.0 kernel

 Hello.

I am running Slackware 1.1.1 (0.99.14) and I would like to upgrade to
the Linux 1.0 kernel.

I downloaded the full kernel source (linux-1.0.tar.gz) from sunsite
yesterday.

Problem: I have only 4.7 MB left in my root partition. :(

Question: Could I simply 'rm -f' my existing /usr/src/linux and then
untar linux-1.0.tar.gz in its place *or* would I have to apply any and
all kernel patches that were issued between pl-14 and Linux 1.0 before I
could do that?

Follow-up question: If it is possible to install Linux 1.0 without
applying the patches that were issued between pl-14 and Linux 1.0, would
I then be able to apply the patches that came after Linux 1.0?

 TIA, Bill
