@#%^&ed up font scaling with ttf fonts

I have this same exact problem on every computer I have recently put
true type fonts on.

Here's a screen shot
http://www.veryComputer.com/*edupfonts.png

Half the fonts are huge, and some are way tinier than they should be.
All the fonts that are the correct size are not ttf fonts.  I have
looked everywhere and cannot find anything out about this.  I have
installed ttf fonts from multiple sources, tried different versions of
freetype2, compiled X4.2 against different versions of freetype2,
compiled X4.2 with the version of freetype2 included with it, etc.

1. problem seeing newly installed TTF fonts in KDE Look&Feel->Fonts

Good morning (or afternoon or evening or night - whatever)!

I "ripped" Windows fonts folder and added it's ttf fonts to Linux
fonts resources using KDE Control Center System -> Font Installer. Now
I perfectly see these new ttf fonts in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF
folder.

However, I CAN'T PICK them in LookNFeel -> Fonts. They are not on the
list. Neither Font server restart (xfs), nor full restart helped.

What should I fix in order to get them on the available fonts list?

Thank you for reading these lines.
