Q: updating my drive's Master Boot Record

Post by Ken Onwe » Mon, 11 Sep 1995 04:00:00

I presently have Linux as the only bootable partition in my HD's Master
Boot Record.  However, I do have a second (DOS) partition, as such I wish to
have my HD give me a choice of OS at bootup.  Can this be done without
reinstalling Linux ?  IOW, what's the easieast way to achieve this ?

Install LILO, it will do exactly what you ask.   It can be configured
to wait a short time before auto-booting the default OS, or if any
of a number of keys (caps lock, shift, cntl, alt, and I dont' remember
what all) are pressed during the wait period it will prompt you for
the name of an OS to boot, and can give you a list of names if you
hit the TAB key.

It is fairly easy to set up too.

Have a good day,
Floyd

1. Q: updating my drive's Master Boot Record

Basically you want to edit the lilo.* files in /etc.  The details on
how exactly to do this is way too much to describe here. Try reading
the README in /usr/src/lilo.  I found that the documentation for FIPS
helped me with the theoreticals, so you might want to browse through
that too.
